Wedding confetti by Shropshire Petals

Wedding confetti - what's that all about?! Why do people throw confetti at weddings? What is confetti made of? These are just a few questions that couples have asked about wedding confetti.

History of wedding confetti

The tradition of throwing things at the bride & groom on their wedding day came from Italy.  Not very nice of them, you may think, but actually throwing confetti was thought to bestow prosperity and fertility on the newlyweds. Guests would shower the couple with rice or grain, flower petals and in later years paper. Some time ago, venues started to rule that confetti was not to be thrown on the premises as this would always lead to lots of mess to clean up, sometime with dye from the paper seeping out and causing damage.  Always be sure to check with your venue about the use of wedding confetti, as some places still don't allow its use.

These days though, more eco friendly options are available again, such as natural, dried flower petals.  These are feather light, so you don't get the sting of grains of rice hitting you, and they are, of course, biodegradable.Shropshire Petals specialises in wedding confetti, they have 10 years experience and offer a large range of colours and flower types to suit any wedding theme.  I can also heartily recommend them, as they were the supplier of choice for my own wedding.  They have lots of useful information and ideas on their website, were able to advise me on which blends would best suit my colour scheme, and even sent out a free sample to make sure I was happy with my selection.Time to hand over to Shropshire Petals to answer some questions about their confetti.

What is your all-time best selling confetti mix?We have lots of colours and varieties of petals, but the one that customers choose the most is our gorgeous Kaleidoscope.  It is a stunning colourful mix of ivory, pink, purple and lilac.  This bold mix is perfect for standing out beautifully on photos. What colours are looking most popular for 2017 weddings? We have a delayed delivery service where customers can order now and delay the delivery of the confetti until a few weeks before their wedding.  We’ve had many orders already for 2017, which has given us a great indication of what will be popular for 2017.  Similar to this season, 2017 is going to be a mix of pastels and brights.  Mixes such as our Coral Reef (orange, pink and ivory) and Summer Nights (lilac, pink and ivory) are top choices.  We have recently launched our lilac rose petal Parma Violet and bright pink Flamingo Pink rose petals, which customers are using to create their own pretty mixes for 2017.What type of flowers do you use in your confetti mixes? We have a range of petals for customers to choose from.  These include our delphinium and wildflowers and larger petals.  In the smaller delphinium and wildflower range, we have delphiniums, cornflowers, calendula, sunflowers, lavender grain and heather grain.  Our larger petals are roses, hydrangeas and large delphinium heads. How are the flowers processed? We grow all of our delphinium and wildflowers in the fields, which bloom from mid July to the end of August.  These are carefully handpicked from the fields and each petal is taken off by hand in the de-petalling shed.  Petals are then dried and stored ready to be sent out to customers.Which type of flowers do you recommend for throwing confetti? We always recommend our delphinium & wildflower petals for throwing confetti as they are small and light, giving the perfect flutter as they fall.  Larger petals are heavier and fall quickly.  If customers want a colour, which is only available in the larger petals, we advise them to mix them with smaller petals, which will show off the colour beautifully and give a textured look to their photos. How far in advance should a bride and groom order their confetti?Customers can order as far in advance as they would like to now with our delayed delivery service.  However, if they want to order before their wedding, we’d recommend 3-4 months before their wedding date, as they will keep beautifully.  We do have a next day delivery service too in case couples forget to order their confetti! How much confetti is needed?Depending on what customers want to use it for (throwing, decorating, petal paths) will depend on how much to order.  As a general rule, for throwing confetti, we recommend ordering enough for half of your guests, as it tends to be just the ladies who throw confetti.  1 litre is enough for approx. 10 handfuls.  However, we do also have a Confetti Calculator to help you work out how much you will need. How much does your confetti cost? Our confetti is sold by the litre.  A litre of delphinium & wildflowers is £11.95, a mix with delphinium & wildflower and larger petals is £13.95, and larger petals are £15.95 pet litre.  We also sell individual sachets from £1.85 each and our new Confetti Pops are £2.50 each.  We have a range of packaging options too, which all vary in price depending on the confetti mix chosen. Many thanks to Shropshire Petals for contributing to this post.
